Emergent Curriculum

Bunker Hill’s Emergent Curriculum tailors learning to the interests and passions of students, teachers, and parents. It emphasizes observation, documentation, and flexibility, starting with what excites the children rather than a predefined lesson plan. While it values children’s interests, teachers also guide learning with important topics, using relevant materials and experiences as jumping off points.

At Bunker Hill we see ourselves as the stage directors, with the curriculum being the teacher’s domain and not just the children’s. While emergent curriculum is inspired by children’s ideas, it also draws from a broad spectrum reflecting their diverse experiences.

This approach requires creativity and flexibility from both teachers and parents. The journey’s direction isn’t predetermined, adding excitement and unpredictability to teaching. When interests emerge, teachers and parents collaborate to explore these topics deeply, using webbing for its playful adaptability. This method outlines potential learning paths rather than fixed plans, acting as a dynamic ‘road map‘. This map is enriched by family contributions that integrate values and ideas into our classroom, creating a tapestry of possibilities for exploration. We can’t wait to see you at Bunker Hill!
